I have found a new interest in the autistic community. From watching a movie called "Autism is a World" I learned a lot through watching this video. It was about a woman named Sue Ruben who is a autistic and has been in college for four years, and lives by herself independently. This woman inspired that no matter what life through at you, you can succeed and reach your goal. I found this woman story to be remarkable. It really showed me how important family is, and how fare one person can go having a good support system. I found her life to be very shocking and different from my own. I really appreciated how honest and comfortable she was with telling her story. Something that stood out to me was when she talked about the impulse's that she has to injure herself. She found ways to cope with her disability while still living a very comfortable life.
Now on the other hand, when relating this to a another story that displayed the autistic community was a story called "Al Capone Does My Shirt". In this young adult story it was about a family that moved to Alcatraz. In this story there was a character named Natalie who throughout the story displayed a lot of autistic tendencies. However the author of the book never confirmed her disability. When comparing the two girls, Sue seems to be more confident and has more knowledge on her disability. While Natalie is very young and seems to be held down by her family especially her mother. Somethings that I did find good about this book is that autism was not displayed in this book using the stereotypical behavior. Do you all know about any stories that display Autism and if so please do share!!!!
